Iranian Cinema was the focus of the Mehr Iranian Cultural Association of Toronto’s monthly public gathering at Global Link on July 18, from 6 to 8:30 PM. The talk was titled “From Dance and Song to Thought”.
Iranian Cinema: Commercial vs. Intellectual Films
The speaker, Aref Mohammadi, explored one of the longest debates in Iranian film history: the tension between popular commercial films, often full of music and dance, and the intellectual cinema that tried to make audiences think.
For decades, filmmakers in Iran have moved between these two worlds. Commercial films filled theatres and entertained families, while filmmakers of the new wave created works that won international attention. Understanding this history helps us see today’s films in a new light. Read more about the cinema of Iran.
